Obstetrics & Gynecology

The Obstetrics and Gynecology department looks after women through pregnancy and delivery, and treats gynecological conditions at every stage of life. Care is provided by specialist physicians with an operating theatre and a neonatal unit in the same building, so that a complication during delivery can be dealt with without transferring the patient elsewhere.

Ultrasound, laboratory work and blood bank services are all on site. That matters most in obstetrics, where a decision sometimes has to be made in minutes rather than days.

Care during pregnancy

Antenatal care includes regular check-ups, ultrasound scans to follow the baby’s growth, blood pressure and blood sugar monitoring, and screening for anaemia and infection. High-risk pregnancies — including diabetes in pregnancy, high blood pressure and previous caesarean section — are followed more closely.

Deliveries take place in the hospital’s maternity unit, with caesarean section available at any hour when it is needed. A pediatrician examines the newborn, and mother and baby are reviewed together before discharge.

Gynecological conditions and surgery

The department treats menstrual disorders, ovarian cysts, fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic infection, and conditions of the cervix and uterus. Surgery is performed both laparoscopically and by open technique, depending on what the condition requires.

The fertility programme covers assessment of both partners, ovarian stimulation, IUI and IVF, with counselling at each stage so that couples understand the likelihood of success before starting a cycle.

Before you come

Bring your identification, previous ultrasound reports and test results, and — if you are pregnant — your antenatal card. Note the first day of your last menstrual period; it is the first thing you will be asked.

For heavy bleeding in pregnancy, severe abdominal pain, reduced fetal movement, or waters breaking before term, go directly to the emergency department at any hour.
