Pediatrics & Neonatal Care

The Pediatrics and Neonatal department cares for children from the first hours of life through adolescence. Children are not small adults — their illnesses present differently, their doses are calculated by weight, and the way a diagnosis is explained matters as much to the parents as to the child.

The department works alongside the hospital’s laboratory and imaging units, so blood work and X-rays are done in the same building and results usually reach the physician the same day. Where a child needs surgery or intensive care, the pediatrician stays involved and coordinates with the relevant department.

Conditions we treat

Fevers and childhood infections, respiratory illness including asthma and pneumonia, diarrhoea and dehydration, malnutrition and growth problems, anaemia, urinary infections, allergies and skin conditions, and the routine follow-up of children with long-term illness.

We also run scheduled well-child visits: weight and height are plotted against growth charts, development is checked against age milestones, and vaccinations are given according to the national immunisation schedule.

Newborn and neonatal care

Newborns delivered at the hospital are examined within the first hours of life. The neonatal unit cares for premature infants, babies with low birth weight, jaundice, breathing difficulty and infection, with monitoring around the clock.

Parents are shown how to feed, hold and care for a premature baby before discharge, and a follow-up appointment is arranged so that weight gain and development can be checked in the weeks that follow.

Before you come

Bring your child’s vaccination card, any previous prescriptions or test results, and a note of the medicines the child is currently taking. If your child has a fever, write down when it started and how high it has been.

For difficulty breathing, persistent vomiting, seizures, unresponsiveness or a serious injury, go directly to the emergency department, which is open 24 hours a day.
