The Dermatology department treats conditions of the skin, hair and nails, and provides aesthetic treatments carried out by qualified physicians. Skin complaints are among the most common reasons people attend a hospital, and most are treatable once the diagnosis is correct.

Where a diagnosis is uncertain, a skin biopsy can be taken and examined by the hospital’s own pathology unit; laboratory testing for fungal and bacterial infection is available in the same building.

Conditions we treat

Acne and its scarring, eczema and dermatitis, psoriasis, fungal infections of skin and nails, bacterial and viral skin infections, urticaria and allergic reactions, pigmentation disorders including melasma and vitiligo, hair loss, and chronic itching.

Moles and skin growths are examined and, where appropriate, removed and sent for pathological examination. Any lesion that has changed in size, shape or colour should be shown to a physician rather than watched at home.

Aesthetic treatments

Treatments offered include chemical peels for pigmentation and acne scarring, treatment for hair loss, removal of warts and skin tags, and scar management. Each begins with a consultation in which the physician explains what the treatment can realistically achieve — and what it cannot.

Aesthetic work is medical work. It is planned according to skin type, carried out with the same sterile precautions as any other procedure, and followed up to confirm that the skin has healed as expected.

Before you come

Do not apply makeup or creams to the affected area on the day of your appointment — the physician needs to see the skin as it is. Bring any creams or tablets you have already tried, including those bought without prescription, and note how long the condition has been present.

For a rapidly spreading rash with fever, extensive blistering, or swelling of the face, lips or tongue, go to the emergency department immediately.
